History of Chata pod Rysmi

Chata pod Rysmi is the highest mountain hut in Slovakia, located at an altitude of 2,250 meters above sea level below the iconic peak of Rysy. Its history dates back to the early 20th century, when the Tatra Mountains began to open up to tourists.

The first simple shelter was built here by members of the Czechoslovak Tourist Club in 1933. It was a small stone cottage that provided basic accommodation and shelter from the weather.

During World War II, the cottage served as a refuge for partisans and later for climbers and tourists. Although it was exposed to extreme weather conditions and damaged several times by avalanches, it was always successfully restored.

The greatest disaster came in 1999, when an avalanche destroyed most of the original building. However, the restoration brought together hundreds of volunteers and lovers of the Tatra Mountains – thanks to their help, the cottage was rebuilt and reopened in 2001.

Today, Chata pod Rysmi is not only a tourist destination, but also a symbol of perseverance, solidarity, and love for the mountains. Every year, it welcomes thousands of visitors from all over the world who come here for unforgettable views and a genuine mountain atmosphere.
